Natural Ways To Alleviate Your Child’s Cough
Cough suppressants may actually be harmful for babies and toddlers, since they can make them dizzy and restless. The side effects of any medication will be stronger in a smaller body, so you should be careful with any kind of medication. When you are considering giving your child medication, always consult with a doctor first.
In today’s blog post we’ll be sharing some natural cough remedies that you don’t need to worry about giving your child. Here at Punkin Butt, we’re passionate about finding natural remedies whenever possible — that’s why we started our own line of homeopathic products! In today’s post we’ll be sharing a few natural ways to alleviate your baby’s cough. Continue reading to learn more and shop our collections today!
Honey
Honey is one of nature’s medicines for relieving coughs and helping sick children sleep better. Plus, kids love it because it tastes delicious! Try using dark honey, like buckwheat, because they’re higher in antioxidants than the average honey you’ll find on your supermarket’s shelf. Give a half of a teaspoon to children ages 1 to 5. Warning: don’t get honey to babies younger than one. While it’s rare, your child could get botulism from the bacteria in honey.
Warm Soup
Chicken soup is good for the soul — and for the cough! It has anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, eating a warm bowl of soup acts like a vaporizer, helping loosen mucus and clear your child’s airways. If your family is vegetarian, try cooking up hearty vegetable soup with pasta.
Popsicles
A popsicle or a bowl of crushed ice is a great way to soothe a child’s sore throat. They’ll enjoy eating it, and if you buy an all-natural berry popsicle, or make your own, they’ll be getting a serving of fruit while soothing their scratchy throat!
Humidifier
A cool-mist humidifier is a great thing to keep in your child’s room all year, but it can be especially helpful when your child has a cough or cold. Moist air helps loosen chest congestion and helps your child breath more easily. Be surel to clean it out regularly though, as bacteria and mold can grow within the unit. Change the water frequently and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Steamy Bathroom
After you give your child a bath, try filling the tub with really hot water and have your child sit in the steamy bathroom. Like many of the items on this list, sitting in a steam can help thin the mucus and give your child some relief from their cough and congestion.
Herbal Tea
Tea is a powerful homeopathic product, and you can give herbal teas like chamomile to your toddler. Sweeten it with honey and make sure it’s not too warm. Peppermint tea is also a great choice for overcoming the common cold. Herbal teas not only fight sore throats, but they can also help with aches and congestion as well.
