4 Tips & Tricks to Keep Your Furry Friends Healthy This Winter

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

The winter season is filled with cool winds, rainy days, and cloudy skies. While the change in weather can be exciting for some, it’s important to realize that it can affect your pets in more ways than one. Good news — there are many precautions you can take to keep your furry friends healthy this winter. Continue reading for 4 tips & tricks to get the job done:

Stay Active

You may feel discouraged to exercise when you look outside and see snow, rain, or wet roads. But, your doggos still need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for their overall well-being. You and your animals can stay active by going on short-walks with the proper attire. Or, if you would rather stay inside for activities, consider using indoor toys like mazes, slow-feeders, ropes, or squeakers to help burn off their energy. You can even run up and down the stairs, or from room-to-room to get the ‘zoomies’ going!

For those who can’t stand the winter weather, there are so many alternatives to playing at home or outside. You can find a local indoor dog park, take a stroll through the pet store, or even try out a doggie daycare!

Invest in Dog Jackets

When you decide to step out into the winter weather, it’s imperative that you prepare your pup for the cold conditions. From paw booties to dog jackets, the possibilities are endless! Dog jackets can provide your furry friend with just enough coverage to keep them warm, but they are designed with enough freedom for running, playing, and more. Protect your doggie from frostbite, hypothermia, illness, and dry and itchy skin with a stylish and comfortable dog jacket this winter.

Give them Gifts

With the holiday spirit in the air, there is no better time to give your pups the gift of health and wellness. Think about getting new toys, delicious bones, nutritional supplements, or apparel for your pets. This can better prepare them for spending more time inside during the colder months. And, it will boost their mental health overall!

Pamper Those Paws with Punkin Butt

Puppy paws are just as delicate as a baby’s butt. Here at Punkin Butt, we know your pets are precious, and they depend on you to keep them healthy and safe. 3 Helpful Tips to Alleviate Diaper Rash Symptoms

A baby is laying on the bed with an adult holding a bottle.

There’s nothing pleasant about a baby that is dealing with discomfort. Whether it is gas, abdominal pain, or diaper rash, you can surely tell when something isn’t right. Diaper rash is a relatively common condition for babies. It is usually caused by prolonged moisture, such as wearing a wet diaper for too long. It can also be linked to teething, new foods, medications, and diarrhea.

Signs of a diaper rash include tender, red, and scaly skin. Continue reading to learn about some tips to help alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms:

Clean

First and foremost, it’s important to clean the area to mitigate the risk of infection or further irritation. Whenever there may be a chance that your baby has soiled their diaper, you should change it immediately. We recommend checking every hour or so to guarantee that they are not sitting in any moisture.

When you’re going to clean the area, you can use warm water, gentle soap, and a washcloth to get the job done. Feel free to also use a gentle, fragrance-free wipe that is designed specifically for sensitive skin. This can help free the area of any bacteria that may be lingering.

Drying

Properly dying your baby’s bottom is the next step. It’s critical that you gently pat the skin dry, instead of wiping or rubbing. If you rub the irritated skin, it can lead to tears, puffiness, and inflammation — Ouch! It’s best to treat the area with delicacy to avoid making things worse.

Try Punkin Butt Diaper Rash Spray

Once you have successfully cleaned and dried the area, the best thing you can do is apply a cream, gel, or spray to the affected area. Your baby can feel instant relief when the rash is moisturized, especially if you use a formula that offers soothing properties. Here at Punkin Butt, we offer natural herb-infused products specially-formulated with non-toxic ingredients, so you can rest assured that your little one is getting the best of the best.

Our Diaper Rash Spray can save the day from a pesky rash that hurts to touch. We designed a moisturizing and soothing oil that creates a moisture barrier without having to rub irritated and sore skin. Unlike creams, you can simply spray on the directed area and allow it to absorb naturally into the skin.  This baby care product can simplify the diaper changing process when the skin is feeling tender. How Do You Treat Sore Nipples

A baby is nursing from the chest of another infant.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to a multitude of changes in the body. From weight gain and back pain, to bruising and sore nipples, many women around the world go through similar experiences. Did you know that as many as 90% of new moms have dealt with some form of nipple soreness? The pain can range from slight tenderness to significant discomfort.

Some women experience so much nipple pain after breastfeeding that they have to use nipple shields. Of course, nipple pain can stem from several sources (even if you are not pregnant). And, how you deal with it will depend on the cause of your nipple pain. Here are a few common causes of nipple pain and what you can do about it.

Are Your Hormones Acting up?

Hormones, more often than not, are the cause for nipple soreness and discomfort. During your period, your hormones fluctuate and one of the side effects can be nipple pain. Both estrogen and progesterone levels increase just before your period starts. This process draws fluid into the breasts, making them feel swollen and tender. Estrogen causes breast ducts to enlarge and progesterone causes milk glands to swell.

Are You Pregnant?

Pregnancy will send your hormones into overdrive. It’s often accompanied by physiological changes that can result in nipple soreness. As your breasts prepare for lactation, you may notice that your nipples are more sensitive. This is because the milk ducts are growing and being stretched as they fill with milk during pregnancy.

Are Your Clothes to Blame?

If you’re feeling tenderness on the surface of your nipples, it could be because your clothing is too rough, or doesn’t fit quite right. Friction, even if painless in the beginning, can cause serious discomfort if you let it go untreated too long.

Sometimes, it is not your clothes that are causing discomfort, but the detergent you use to wash them. Many people have reactions when sensitive skin comes into contact with certain chemicals, and it isn’t uncommon to discover you’re allergic to your laundry detergent.

How Can You Find Relief?

If you’re experiencing unnatural pain, the first thing you should do is consult your doctor. Sometimes pain stems from benign sources and sometimes it’s serious. If pain persists more than a few days, give your doctor a call.

If you’re nursing and experiencing nipple pain, try Punkin Butt’s Nipple Butter Soothing Balm. Our balm is formulated to be creamy and moisturizing. It is free of preservatives, parabens, phthalates, lanolin, and petroleum.  Filled with only skin-loving ingredients that rub on easily, you will instantly feel relief after using this soothing balm!

It was specifically developed to help soothe tender, sore, or nursing nipples. There is no stickiness, and no waiting for it to melt — Just apply often to keep your skin soft and comfortable during nursing.

Here at Punkin Butt, we make all our products with ingredients that you feel comfortable having in your baby’s mouth and soaking into your skin. The last thing you want to worry about is any chemical or residue in your precious baby.

P.S. — Our balm also works well on dry, chapped skin, lips, cuticles, and even the roughest spots like your feet and elbows. Shop the rest of our homeopathic products now!

Benefits Of Peppermint

Leafy Greens

Like many essential oils and herbs, peppermint has many different benefits and can be used to sooth a variety of ailments in both you and your baby. In today’s blog we’ll be sharing a few of the uses of peppermint and potential health benefits.

If you’re looking for homeopathic products that use the healing properties of peppermint, browse Punkin Butt’s collections. We incorporate peppermint oil in many of our products and our formulas are safe for babies, which is not always true of concentrated essential oils. Continue reading to learn more and shop Punkin Butt today!

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

What Is Peppermint?

The herb peppermint is a cross between two types of mint — spearmint and watermint. Both the leaves themselves and the essential oils extracted from the leaves are used for health purposes and found in homeopathic products.

Mint has been used for health purposes for several thousand years and is mentioned in records all the way back to Ancient Egypt! Peppermint, however, was not recognized as a distinct type of mint until the 1700s, and it has been used ever since. Today, peppermint is used in a variety of products, from teas to flavoring candy to topical pain creams.

Ease Digestive Issues

Those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive problems often use peppermint as a dietary supplement. Peppermint may relieve symptoms such as gas, bloating, and indigestion, all of which can cause extreme abdominal pain.

Studies indicate that peppermint relaxes your digestive system by preventing smooth muscles from contracting. This can relieve spasms you have in your gut when you are suffering from stomach pain or IBS. Peppermint oil can also reduce nausea for those undergoing chemotherapy.

Relieve Headaches

Peppermint oil can also be applied to the skin to alleviate headaches, muscle aches, and other problems. It is also used in aromatherapy to soothe anxiety and tension, which often lead to headaches. The menthol in peppermint oil increases blood flow and provides a cooling sensation, which is why it’s one of the active ingredients in products like Icy Hot. If you suffer from migraines or tension headaches, it may be helpful to buy a homeopathic product that contains peppermint oil that you can rub on your temples when you are experiencing pain.

Clear Clogged Sinuses

If you or your child is suffering from a head cold, breathing in the steam from peppermint tea can help. Peppermint has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, all of which are great for combating colds and allergies.

Improve Sleep

Peppermint tea or putting some peppermint oil in a diffuser are great choices to calm you and your child before bed. Peppermint is a naturally soothing scent, and it’s muscle relaxant qualities can also help your whole body relax.

How To Reduce Ear Aches In Children

photo of a baby under a purple towel

If you have a child or care for children, you already know how often they come down with ear aches or ear infections! Here at Punkin Butt, we recognized the need to treat this common problem naturally, which is why we created our Punkin Butt Ear Oil. Your child’s small ears aren’t able to drain fluids as well as our adult ones, and they’re also still developing the ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. For that reason, it’s important to watch out for the signs of an ear ache, and if one occurs, try to stop it from developing into an ear infection.

In today’s blog post, we’ll be sharing a few causes of ear aches and what you can do to reduce the likelihood that your child will develop one. If they do, though, make sure that you have a bottle of our famous Punkin Butt Ear Oil to soothe their pain! Shop now and browse our other homeopathic products, including homeopathic teething remedies and diaper rash spray.

Causes of Ear Aches and Ear Infections

Ear infections occur in your middle ear, which is the air-filled space behind your eardrum. Many different things can cause an ear ache or ear infection, including a cold, flu, or even allergies. These things all tend to cause congestion and swelling in the nasal passages and throat, and when the fluid builds up and doesn’t drain properly, it can end up causing an ear infection. Ear aches and ear infections are more likely to occur in the fall and winter, when other illnesses like colds are on the rise. Children under two are more prone to getting ear aches and ear infections because their ears are smaller and shaped differently than older children.

There are also additional factors that can lead to children having a higher risk of ear aches and ear infections. For example, children who attend daycare tend to have more colds, which makes them more likely to get ear aches. If this is true for your family, be sure to have a bottle of Punkin Butt Ear Oil at hand to sooth your child’s pain! Children with cleft palates and babies born prematurely are also at a higher risk. As are children with allergies or those exposed to cigarette smoke.

A child can have ear pain without an infection, though, and that is a great time to use natural ear drops, like Punkin Butt Ear Oil. Our natural ear drops are the perfect homeopathic product to help soothe your child’s pain naturally.

Signs of an Ear Infection:

  • Ear pain, especially when lying down
  • Redness or swelling of the ear
  • Child pulling or rubbing their ears
  • Ear leakage or trouble hearing
  • Vomiting, headache, or fever

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Things You Can Do

Ear aches can be caused by many different things, and some children are just more likely to get them than others! However, there are a few things you can to do help reduce the chances of your child getting an ear ache or ear infection. If your child does have an ear ache, though, using natural ear drops is a great way to help them get through the pain.

Bottles and Pacifiers

When a child drinks from a bottle while lying down, they’re more likely to get an ear infection. The same is true for using a pacifier. That is because the liquid they are drinking or the increased saliva production can get into their Eustachian tubes and middle ear when they are in this position. Some say that breastfeeding your baby in a lying down position will also increase the chance of ear infections, however, research does not indicate that this is true.

Air Quality

Cigarette smoke and other air pollutants can increase your child’s chance of developing an ear ache or ear infection. You can get your home air quality checked and install a clean air system. Also be sure to have anyone who smokes do so outside, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Try to avoid exposing your baby to air pollution as much as possible.

Breastfeeding

While not all mothers are able to breastfeed their babies, it has been shown that babies who nurse for a year or more tend to have fewer infections.

Stay Hydrated

During the cold season — and year round! — it’s important that your child stays hydrated. Along with helping them fight colds, swallowing also helps open the eustachian tube so that fluid trapped in the ear can drain more easily.

Punkin Butt Natural Ear Drops

Activities For Kids During Coronavirus School Closures

Photo of a child playing by Jelleke Vanooteghem on Unsplash

As millions of children are displaced from schools across the country, parents and caregivers are all asking themselves, what will my children do all day? Here at Punkin Butt, we’re mothers ourselves, and we’re asking ourselves the same question. Along with these tips and activities we’ve provided here, organizations and institutions are sharing resources online. For example, your library may be live-streaming storytime or providing access to other online resources. You can also try virtual playdates, to keep them connected and hopeful.

In today’s post, we’ll be sharing some activities you can do with your kids or that they can do independently, giving you a chance to catch up on work, make plans, support family members, and whatever else you have on your todo list. Continue reading to learn more, and if you’re looking for homeopathic products for children that you can order online, shop Punkin Butt collections today.

Make a Routine

All parents know how important a routine is. We start setting sleep routines with infants, but it’s also important to keep a routine for children of all ages. This is especially true when children are home from school and their normal activities, like sports or play dates, are canceled. If you are quarantined inside your home or apartment, a routine is even more important.

Use your child’s school schedule as a framework. When are they used to having a snack or eating lunch? When is recess? If they are doing homework or online work, do they work best in the morning or afternoon? Be sure to dedicate unstructured, child-led playtime. Depending on the age of your child, it may be in 15-minute or 30-minute chunks. Try creating a space in your house where this play takes place and limiting your child’s options. Limit your involvement and put the responsibility of cleaning up on them.

If possible, and safe, have time for outdoor play at least once a day. Even if the weather isn’t great, letting your child go outside and burn off some energy is a vital part of keeping everyone happy! Go outside in whatever way works for you, whether that’s a backyard, a balcony, or even a garage.

Easy Indoor Activities

When thinking of how to plan activities for your children, remember that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be engaging. Have a back pocket full of activities that you can use during the day is vital to keeping everything running smoothly. Here are a few we love here at Punkin Butt, and we hope that you find them useful!

Art Time

Plan a time for art each day. It can be as easy as putting out paper and crayons or you could spread out a sheet and have kids paint. We really like having kids paint weird shaped objects, like oatmeal containers or egg cartons. Kids love decorating random objects and you’ll be surprised at their creations and how long they’ll be engaged!

Toy Washing

Here at Punkin Butt, we love when you can make a game out of something that needs to be done. That’s one of the reasons why we created our Natural Bubble Bath Dough Set — bathtime becomes much more fun when you add this homeopathic product! A great game that can engage kids for hours — and disinfect grimy toys — is a toy washing station. Fill a container with safe, all-natural bubbles, like our Natural Bubble Bath and Body Wash, and give them sponges, towels, and any other supplies they need to wash their plastic toys.

Reading Time

When you’re making that routine, be sure to put in blocks of time for reading. 15-20 minutes a day is a great goal to start with. Depending on the age of your children, this may mean reading aloud or silent reading time. If everyone is home, try making it a family activity and sit down and read with them.

Puzzles

If you have space, set out a puzzle that everyone in the family can work on when they feel like it. Put it in an area that people walk by regularly, and you’re sure to see your child sit down and try to fit in a few pieces throughout the day. Or, depending on your child’s interests, they may be engaged for hours!

Post-It Note Math Or Reading

Schools have considerably more learning tools at their disposal than the average family, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create your own games at home with the materials you have available! Write letters or numbers on post-it notes and let kids use them to fill in the blanks between words or number problems.

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

We started Punkin Butt because we wanted to help other parents like ourselves. We primarily do that through providing safe, all-natural child care products. But we also do that through our blog, and we hope you found these tips and activities useful. If your kids are at home with you during this challenging time, we hope that you’re finding ways to keep them happy and healthy.

Natural Ways To Alleviate Your Child’s Cough

Babys Playing

Cough suppressants may actually be harmful for babies and  toddlers, since they can make them dizzy and restless. The side effects of any medication will be stronger in a smaller body, so you should be careful with any kind of medication. When you are considering giving your child medication, always consult with a doctor first.

In today’s blog post we’ll be sharing some natural cough remedies that you don’t need to worry about giving your child. Here at Punkin Butt, we’re passionate about finding natural remedies whenever possible — that’s why we started our own line of homeopathic products! In today’s post we’ll be sharing a few natural ways to alleviate your baby’s cough. Continue reading to learn more and shop our collections today!

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Honey

Honey is one of nature’s medicines for relieving coughs and helping sick children sleep better. Plus, kids love it because it tastes delicious! Try using dark honey, like buckwheat, because they’re higher in antioxidants than the average honey you’ll find on your supermarket’s shelf. Give a half of a teaspoon to children ages 1 to 5. Warning: don’t get honey to babies younger than one. While it’s rare, your child could get botulism from the bacteria in honey.

Warm Soup

Chicken soup is good for the soul — and for the cough! It has anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, eating a warm bowl of soup acts like a vaporizer, helping loosen mucus and clear your child’s airways. If your family is vegetarian, try cooking up hearty vegetable soup with pasta.

Popsicles

A popsicle or a bowl of crushed ice is a great way to soothe a child’s sore throat. They’ll enjoy eating it, and if you buy an all-natural berry popsicle, or make your own, they’ll be getting a serving of fruit while soothing their scratchy throat!

Humidifier

A cool-mist humidifier is a great thing to keep in your child’s room all year, but it can be especially helpful when your child has a cough or cold. Moist air helps loosen chest congestion and helps your child breath more easily. Be surel to clean it out regularly though, as bacteria and mold can grow within the unit. Change the water frequently and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Steamy Bathroom

After you give your child a bath, try filling the tub with really hot water and have your child sit in the steamy bathroom. Like many of the items on this list, sitting in a steam can help thin the mucus and give your child some relief from their cough and congestion.

Herbal Tea

Tea is a powerful homeopathic product, and you can give herbal teas like chamomile to your toddler. Sweeten it with honey and make sure it’s not too warm. Peppermint tea is also a great choice for overcoming the common cold. Herbal teas not only fight sore throats, but they can also help with aches and congestion as well.

Punkin Butt Homeopathic Products

Here at Punkin Butt, we’ve worked hard to create safe and effective homeopathic products for parents. We understand how challenging it is to parent in our contemporary world, but we’re doing our best to make sure that we make the best decisions possible when it comes to our childrens’ health and wellness.

We’ve joined forces with an aromatherapist, naturopath, and a couple local pediatricians to develop our collections. The Stages Of Baby Teething: What To Expect And How To Prepare

The Stages Of Baby Teething What To Expect And How To Prepare

We know that the teething stage is not only hard on your baby, but on you as well. As parents, it’s difficult to hear your baby’s cries and know that they are in pain. It is our instinct to do whatever we can to ease that pain and make them as comfortable as possible.

In today’s post from Punkin Butt, we’ll go over the five stages of baby teething so that you know what to expect and how to prepare. Making your child as comfortable as possible is important not only to you, but to us as well. Be sure to check out our latest blog post to learn more about how you can safely soothe teething pain, and be sure to browse our shop for more teething solutions and treatments today!

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Stage One: 0-6 Months

When babies are born, they have their full set of ‘milk teeth’ beneath the gums, and these teeth can start to appear anytime during these first few months. Milk teeth are just the temporary, first set of teeth in your baby’s growth and development.

For some babies, it can take weeks for the first tooth to appear, and for some it is only a few days. It’s even possible for a baby to be born with teeth even though some won’t get them until much later. Teething is the term that refers to the process of the teeth being pushing through the gums. Babies can start to teethe before six months, but teeth don’t generally start to appear yet. So, in stage one, you can expect a few painful teething episodes, but no teeth yet.

Stage Two: 6 Months

The second stage of teething will be a little more painful for your baby — causing more of those sleepless nights and restless days. After six months, your baby’s incisors will start to come through and usually in a specific order. Typically, the two middle teeth at the bottom come first.

When your baby starts teething, Punkin Butt has a variety of products to help soothe the pain and provide safe teething solutions, including our teething oil and amber teething solution necklace.

Stage Three: 10-18 Months

The third stage of teething involves the molar teeth that are needed for chewing and eating. They also appear in a particular order, starting with the top teeth on either side of the mouth and followed by the two bigger teeth on each side on the bottom.

Molars are very painful for babies, so you can expect some extra drooling and even an upset stomach. To help ease the pain of this stage of teething, grab a bottle of Punkin Butt Teething Oil today.

Stage Four: 16-22 Months

Stage four of the teething process involves the canine teeth and a lot of pain and discomfort once again. The first two canine teeth to appear will be on top before the lower canine teeth come through. At this point, even through the pain and discomfort, your baby will have a beautiful smile to start showing off!

The Amber Teething Solution Necklace that we offer here at Punkin Butt is a great way to soothe some of that intense teething pain. There are also a wide variety of teething oils that can be used to help alleviate some of that pain and discomfort. To truly be prepared, be sure to stock up on these oils and other products to help your baby in the safest way possible.

Stage Five: 25-33 Months

The last stage of teething can sometimes be the most painful (we know, will it ever end?) It’s only the most painful because this is when the biggest teeth start to erupt through the gums. At this point, you have more of a toddler on your hands now, which can be beneficial because they can more accurately let you know that they are in pain and exactly what hurts.

Many parents don’t realize that their baby can still be teething at this point, so it’s important to check for new teeth if your child is complaining of pain or discomfort or even generally not feeling well.

By the end of these five stages, your baby will have 20 beautiful teeth, and you made it! You survived and so did they.

Safely Soothing Teething Pain

Smiling mother and father holding their newborn baby daughter at home

We started Punkin butt because we accidently burned one of our babies’ gums by using straight clove oil. We were trying to do the right thing and use safe, homeopathic products for our child, but it ended up hurting them instead of helping.

We realized that there was a need for well-researched and developed products that would safely sooth teeth pain. We joined forces with an aromatherapist, naturopath, and a couple local pediatricians to develop our first product: Punkin Butt Teething Oil. Since then, we developed a whole lot of other great homeopathic products, including bottom balms, soaps, and even products for mom and dad!

We’re always on the lookout for great products for babies and their parents, and we enjoy sharing what we’ve learned here on our blog. In today’s post we’ll be going back to our teething oil roots and sharing some ways to safely soothe teething pain in babies. Continue reading to learn more and browse our shop for teething solutions and other teething treatments!

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Massage the Gums

Our first tip is really easy — if your child’s gums are swollen, gently rub them with your finger. There’s nothing quite like a parent’s touch, and that goes for teething pain too! Of course, make sure your fingers are clean, and be gentle. You can also use a moistened gauze pad or washcloth. The pressure will help ease your baby’s discomfort and soothe their pain.

Cool Teething Rings

We all know that cool things reduce swelling, and that includes teething pain. You can put a firm rubber teething ring in the fridge and let your baby chew on the ring. The coolness and the pressure from biting down on the ring will help sooth the pain. Make sure that the ring is not frozen, though, as it can hurt your baby’s gums. You should also try to make sure that the ring is not too hard, or it can hurt your child’s gums.

Try Hard Foods

If your baby is eating solid foods, you can offer them something to gnaw on, like a peeled cucumber or carrot. Plus, if they’ve been in the fridge for a while, they’ll also be cool. As alway, watch closely to make sure that the child doesn’t choke on the food.

Dry Drooling

Part of teething is drooling. But when drooling isn’t cleaned up, it can start to irritate your baby’s face. Keep a clean cloth around to mop up that drool when you see it and, if needed, you can apply moisturizer to your child’s chin. Although our main focus on teething pain is the gums, the entire mouth area and chin can also get irritated and inflamed when your child is teething.

Use Punkin Butt Teething Oil

Of course we believe one of the best ways to safely soothe teething pain is by using our teething and comfort oils! We infuse sunflower oil with organic herbs, then add a touch of essential oils to increase effectiveness and calming aromatherapy.

We know that one of the most difficult parts of being a parent is seeing your child in pain. Teething is a normal, but painful, experience for babies and well-meaning parents who want to ease their child’s pain often turn to products that can be harmful. When you use Punkin Butt Teething Oil to soothe your child’s pain, you can trust that it not only will give your baby immediate relief from teething pains, it is also completely safe and 100% natural. Signs An Earache Is Becoming An Infection

image of a doctor looking into a child's ear

Here at Punkin Butt, we’re committed to creating and using homeopathic products to treat the general aches and pains that we and our children experience. There’s nothing worse than watching your child suffer, and in today’s blog we’ll be looking at ear pain — earaches and ear infections. Continue reading to learn more about the signs that an earache is becoming an infection, and how you can use natural ear drops like Punkin Butt Earache Oil to help soothe your child!

Cold vs. Ear Infection

When you or your child has a cold, the eardrum can become inflamed. The ache — whether it’s dull or sharp — will lessen and go away as your cold leaves. Colds are caused by viruses, not infections, so you won’t be able to use antibiotics to soothe symptoms.

For earaches caused by colds, or just general pain, Punkin Butt Earache Oil is a great solution! It is a soothing, natural treatment for earaches designed to gently clean and comfort the ear canal. You can use our earache oil as infant ear drops, and is infused with calendula, mullein, and a touch of vitamin E.

While our natural ear drops are a safe, everyday option to clean your child’s ears or soothe ear aches caused by colds, we do recommend talking to your doctor if you suspect your baby has an ear infection. Often, you can still use our natural ear drops, but some ear infections need to be treated by antibiotics.

As proponents of homeopathic remedies, we try to avoid using antibiotics, if possible. And that choice is supported by professionals. In fact, the American Academy of Family Physicians recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before treating an ear infection with antibiotics because an ear infection may just clear up on its own. If your child is less than six months old, though, antibiotics are recommended to clear up symptoms before they get worse or cause other problems.

Symptoms of an Ear Infection:

  • Irritability
  • Pulling at the ear
  • Fluid coming from the ear

What You Can Do

We, of course, recommend using Punkin Butt Earache Oil to help soothe your baby’s earache. But if there are other ways you can ease your baby’s pain along with using natural ear drops.

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Warm Compress

Placing a warm, slightly wet compress on your child’s ear can help reduce pain and loosen ear wax. Be careful not to heat the cloth too much. While heat helps — which is why we encourage you to place our Punkin But Earche Oil in a warm bowl of water before application — too much heat can be painful to sensitive baby skin.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure that your child is well hydrated. Along with helping fight colds and ear infections, swallowing can help open the eustachian tube so that fluid trapped in the ear can drain more easily.

Preventing Ear Infections

Many ear infections can’t be prevented, and some children are more prone to experiencing ear aches and ear infections than others. However, there are ways to lessen your baby’s risk, including using natural ear drops when you begin to see the first signs of an earache and making sure that you have homeopathic ear drops on hand when you need it.

Other things that can help lower your baby’s risk of ear infections include:

  • Avoiding second hand smoke, which along with being dangerous to your baby’s respiratory system can also make ear infections more frequent and severe.
  • Proper bottle position. Hold your baby in a semi-upright position so that the liquid doesn’t flow back into the eustachian tubes.
