What Is Peppermint?

The herb peppermint is a cross between two types of mint — spearmint and watermint. Both the leaves themselves and the essential oils extracted from the leaves are used for health purposes and found in homeopathic products.

Mint has been used for health purposes for several thousand years and is mentioned in records all the way back to Ancient Egypt! Peppermint, however, was not recognized as a distinct type of mint until the 1700s, and it has been used ever since. Today, peppermint is used in a variety of products, from teas to flavoring candy to topical pain creams.

Ease Digestive Issues

Those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive problems often use peppermint as a dietary supplement. Peppermint may relieve symptoms such as gas, bloating, and indigestion, all of which can cause extreme abdominal pain.

Studies indicate that peppermint relaxes your digestive system by preventing smooth muscles from contracting. This can relieve spasms you have in your gut when you are suffering from stomach pain or IBS. Peppermint oil can also reduce nausea for those undergoing chemotherapy.

Relieve Headaches

Peppermint oil can also be applied to the skin to alleviate headaches, muscle aches, and other problems. It is also used in aromatherapy to soothe anxiety and tension, which often lead to headaches. The menthol in peppermint oil increases blood flow and provides a cooling sensation, which is why it’s one of the active ingredients in products like Icy Hot. If you suffer from migraines or tension headaches, it may be helpful to buy a homeopathic product that contains peppermint oil that you can rub on your temples when you are experiencing pain.

Clear Clogged Sinuses

If you or your child is suffering from a head cold, breathing in the steam from peppermint tea can help. Peppermint has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, all of which are great for combating colds and allergies.

Improve Sleep

Peppermint tea or putting some peppermint oil in a diffuser are great choices to calm you and your child before bed. Peppermint is a naturally soothing scent, and it’s muscle relaxant qualities can also help your whole body relax.

How To Reduce Ear Aches In Children

photo of a baby under a purple towel

If you have a child or care for children, you already know how often they come down with ear aches or ear infections! Here at Punkin Butt, we recognized the need to treat this common problem naturally, which is why we created our Punkin Butt Ear Oil. Your child’s small ears aren’t able to drain fluids as well as our adult ones, and they’re also still developing the ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. For that reason, it’s important to watch out for the signs of an ear ache, and if one occurs, try to stop it from developing into an ear infection.

In today’s blog post, we’ll be sharing a few causes of ear aches and what you can do to reduce the likelihood that your child will develop one. If they do, though, make sure that you have a bottle of our famous Punkin Butt Ear Oil to soothe their pain! Shop now and browse our other homeopathic products, including homeopathic teething remedies and diaper rash spray.

Causes of Ear Aches and Ear Infections

Ear infections occur in your middle ear, which is the air-filled space behind your eardrum. Many different things can cause an ear ache or ear infection, including a cold, flu, or even allergies. These things all tend to cause congestion and swelling in the nasal passages and throat, and when the fluid builds up and doesn’t drain properly, it can end up causing an ear infection. Ear aches and ear infections are more likely to occur in the fall and winter, when other illnesses like colds are on the rise. Children under two are more prone to getting ear aches and ear infections because their ears are smaller and shaped differently than older children.

There are also additional factors that can lead to children having a higher risk of ear aches and ear infections. For example, children who attend daycare tend to have more colds, which makes them more likely to get ear aches. If this is true for your family, be sure to have a bottle of Punkin Butt Ear Oil at hand to sooth your child’s pain! Children with cleft palates and babies born prematurely are also at a higher risk. As are children with allergies or those exposed to cigarette smoke.

A child can have ear pain without an infection, though, and that is a great time to use natural ear drops, like Punkin Butt Ear Oil. Our natural ear drops are the perfect homeopathic product to help soothe your child’s pain naturally.

Signs of an Ear Infection:

  • Ear pain, especially when lying down
  • Redness or swelling of the ear
  • Child pulling or rubbing their ears
  • Ear leakage or trouble hearing
  • Vomiting, headache, or fever

Things You Can Do

Ear aches can be caused by many different things, and some children are just more likely to get them than others! However, there are a few things you can to do help reduce the chances of your child getting an ear ache or ear infection. If your child does have an ear ache, though, using natural ear drops is a great way to help them get through the pain.

Bottles and Pacifiers

When a child drinks from a bottle while lying down, they’re more likely to get an ear infection. The same is true for using a pacifier. That is because the liquid they are drinking or the increased saliva production can get into their Eustachian tubes and middle ear when they are in this position. Some say that breastfeeding your baby in a lying down position will also increase the chance of ear infections, however, research does not indicate that this is true.

Air Quality

Cigarette smoke and other air pollutants can increase your child’s chance of developing an ear ache or ear infection. You can get your home air quality checked and install a clean air system. Also be sure to have anyone who smokes do so outside, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Try to avoid exposing your baby to air pollution as much as possible.

Breastfeeding

While not all mothers are able to breastfeed their babies, it has been shown that babies who nurse for a year or more tend to have fewer infections.

Stay Hydrated

During the cold season — and year round! — it’s important that your child stays hydrated. Along with helping them fight colds, swallowing also helps open the eustachian tube so that fluid trapped in the ear can drain more easily.

Photo of a child playing by Jelleke Vanooteghem on Unsplash

As millions of children are displaced from schools across the country, parents and caregivers are all asking themselves, what will my children do all day? Here at Punkin Butt, we’re mothers ourselves, and we’re asking ourselves the same question. Along with these tips and activities we’ve provided here, organizations and institutions are sharing resources online. For example, your library may be live-streaming storytime or providing access to other online resources. You can also try virtual playdates, to keep them connected and hopeful.

In today’s post, we’ll be sharing some activities you can do with your kids or that they can do independently, giving you a chance to catch up on work, make plans, support family members, and whatever else you have on your todo list. Make a Routine

All parents know how important a routine is. We start setting sleep routines with infants, but it’s also important to keep a routine for children of all ages. This is especially true when children are home from school and their normal activities, like sports or play dates, are canceled. If you are quarantined inside your home or apartment, a routine is even more important.

Use your child’s school schedule as a framework. When are they used to having a snack or eating lunch? When is recess? If they are doing homework or online work, do they work best in the morning or afternoon? Be sure to dedicate unstructured, child-led playtime. Depending on the age of your child, it may be in 15-minute or 30-minute chunks. Try creating a space in your house where this play takes place and limiting your child’s options. Limit your involvement and put the responsibility of cleaning up on them.

If possible, and safe, have time for outdoor play at least once a day. Even if the weather isn’t great, letting your child go outside and burn off some energy is a vital part of keeping everyone happy! Go outside in whatever way works for you, whether that’s a backyard, a balcony, or even a garage.

Easy Indoor Activities

When thinking of how to plan activities for your children, remember that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be engaging. Have a back pocket full of activities that you can use during the day is vital to keeping everything running smoothly. Here are a few we love here at Punkin Butt, and we hope that you find them useful!

Art Time

Plan a time for art each day. It can be as easy as putting out paper and crayons or you could spread out a sheet and have kids paint. We really like having kids paint weird shaped objects, like oatmeal containers or egg cartons. Kids love decorating random objects and you’ll be surprised at their creations and how long they’ll be engaged!

Toy Washing

Here at Punkin Butt, we love when you can make a game out of something that needs to be done. That’s one of the reasons why we created our Natural Bubble Bath Dough Set — bathtime becomes much more fun when you add this homeopathic product! A great game that can engage kids for hours — and disinfect grimy toys — is a toy washing station. Fill a container with safe, all-natural bubbles, like our Natural Bubble Bath and Body Wash, and give them sponges, towels, and any other supplies they need to wash their plastic toys.

Reading Time

When you’re making that routine, be sure to put in blocks of time for reading. 15-20 minutes a day is a great goal to start with. Depending on the age of your children, this may mean reading aloud or silent reading time. If everyone is home, try making it a family activity and sit down and read with them.

Puzzles

If you have space, set out a puzzle that everyone in the family can work on when they feel like it. Put it in an area that people walk by regularly, and you’re sure to see your child sit down and try to fit in a few pieces throughout the day. Or, depending on your child’s interests, they may be engaged for hours!

Post-It Note Math Or Reading

Schools have considerably more learning tools at their disposal than the average family, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create your own games at home with the materials you have available! Write letters or numbers on post-it notes and let kids use them to fill in the blanks between words or number problems.

Natural Ways To Alleviate Your Child’s Cough

Babys Playing

Cough suppressants may actually be harmful for babies and  toddlers, since they can make them dizzy and restless. The side effects of any medication will be stronger in a smaller body, so you should be careful with any kind of medication. When you are considering giving your child medication, always consult with a doctor first.

In today’s blog post we’ll be sharing some natural cough remedies that you don’t need to worry about giving your child. Here at Punkin Butt, we’re passionate about finding natural remedies whenever possible — that’s why we started our own line of homeopathic products! In today’s post we’ll be sharing a few natural ways to alleviate your baby’s cough. Continue reading to learn more and shop our collections today!

Honey

Honey is one of nature’s medicines for relieving coughs and helping sick children sleep better. Plus, kids love it because it tastes delicious! Try using dark honey, like buckwheat, because they’re higher in antioxidants than the average honey you’ll find on your supermarket’s shelf. Give a half of a teaspoon to children ages 1 to 5. Warning: don’t get honey to babies younger than one. While it’s rare, your child could get botulism from the bacteria in honey.

Warm Soup

Chicken soup is good for the soul — and for the cough! It has anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, eating a warm bowl of soup acts like a vaporizer, helping loosen mucus and clear your child’s airways. If your family is vegetarian, try cooking up hearty vegetable soup with pasta.

Popsicles

A popsicle or a bowl of crushed ice is a great way to soothe a child’s sore throat. They’ll enjoy eating it, and if you buy an all-natural berry popsicle, or make your own, they’ll be getting a serving of fruit while soothing their scratchy throat!

Humidifier

A cool-mist humidifier is a great thing to keep in your child’s room all year, but it can be especially helpful when your child has a cough or cold. Moist air helps loosen chest congestion and helps your child breath more easily. Be surel to clean it out regularly though, as bacteria and mold can grow within the unit. Change the water frequently and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Steamy Bathroom

After you give your child a bath, try filling the tub with really hot water and have your child sit in the steamy bathroom. Like many of the items on this list, sitting in a steam can help thin the mucus and give your child some relief from their cough and congestion.

Herbal Tea

Tea is a powerful homeopathic product, and you can give herbal teas like chamomile to your toddler. Sweeten it with honey and make sure it’s not too warm. Peppermint tea is also a great choice for overcoming the common cold. Herbal teas not only fight sore throats, but they can also help with aches and congestion as well.

4 Reasons To Use BPA-Free Products

The FDA formally banned BPA in sippy cups and baby bottles in 2012, and manufacturers voluntarily stopped using BPA in these products for years prior to this legislation. Yet the dangerous additive continues to be used in other products, including food packaging and drinks in plastic containers. As parents who are concerned for the safety of our children, and who are committed to using and creating natural and homeopathic products, we encourage fellow parents to try to use BPA-free products for their children and themselves.

Today’s blog will focus on five reasons to use BPA-free products for yourself, your family, and your loved ones. Continue reading to learn more, explore the mission behind Punkin Butt, and shop our collections today!

What Is BPA?

BPA is a plasticizer, or a substance added to a synthetic material to make it more flexible and less brittle. This chemical is a hormone-disruptor and has been linked to cancer, obesity, and other health problems. It is a synthetic chemical, and is used in a variety of food packaging, including the linings of soda cans and reusable plastic water bottles.

Currently, the FDA maintains that BPA is safe at the current low levels of human exposure, but as we know, babies and fetuses are much more sensitive to chemical exposure, and those effects can last into adulthood.

A baby is sleeping with his head on the pillow.

Reproductive system

Because BPA is a hormone disruptor, it can interfere with the function of natural hormones. It can behave similarly to estrogen. Research has linked exposure to BPA to fertility problems and male impotence. BPA exposure can also affect egg maturation, and you can read more about the 2013 study here.

Brain

Animal studies have shown that a fetus’ brain is especially vulnerable to the effects of BPA. Because the blood-brain barrier is permeable in the womb, lower levels of BPA exposure can affect the baby’s brain development. As such, here at Punkin Butt we encourage pregnant women to consciously make an effort to consume fewer food products packaged in cans or plastic.

The risk is very low, but higher for women pregnant with girls — it’s unclear why boys are less affected. Studies are still being conducted about the level of risk, but if you are able to make these choices, we urge you to explore less-processed foods and homeopathic products while pregnant.

Heart Problems

Research has linked BPA exposure, even at low doses, to cardiovascular problems. A few problems include:

  • Coronary artery heart disease
  • Heart attack
  • Hypertension
  • Peripheral artery disease

Breast Cancer

Again, because BPA disrupts hormone production, research has strongly suggested that there is a link between the BPA in food and beverage containers and breast cancer. Learn more about  the relationship between breast cancer and BPA here at breastcancer.org.
